FAMILY LAW
Families hold our communities together, but sometimes marriage and co-parenting can be difficult. Sometimes change is needed. My job is to help you through the legal process with a focus on your goals. We will work together to ensure safety and stability. I am here to fight for the future of your children and your financial wellbeing. We will work through negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution. This can help find a new structure for families and an equitable division of marriage assets. I handle cases involving marriage dissolution, child custody, co-parenting conflict resolution, spousal maintenance, child support, temporary orders for urgent matters, and divorces with complex finances such as debt or illiquid assets. I also handle orders for protection and harassment restraining orders.
criminal defense
I believe in being ready for trial, but also finding pathways through negotiation, diversion, programming, addiction treatment, furloughs, mental capacity evaluation, and restorative justice. I have extensive trial experience, including jury trial victories and experience in homicide, forensics, DNA, illegal search and seizure, traffic stop and search warrant challenges, and other constitutional issues. I have handled cases including Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Domestic Assault, Aggravated Assault, Financial Crimes, Criminal Sexual Conduct, Vehicular Crimes, Murder, Kidnapping, and many other criminal charges.
lgbtq+
I am an out and proud gay attorney, with strong connections to the LGBTQ+ community. I am involved in community service through the Volunteer Lawyer’s Network Trans Clinic, assisting with name changes and other family issues. I am a member and former Executive Committee member of Minnesota Lavender Bar, our state LGBTQ+ association of lawyers. I am a member and active participant in Twin Cities Quorum, our LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. In addition to other community activities, I also play trumpet in the Minnesota Freedom Band, an LGBTQ+ community band. I play in the concert band and march with my horn in the Twin Cities Pride Parade!!

Matt has experience in courtrooms around the State, reaching from Fargo-Moorhead to Faribault. The office’s principal focus is in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Richfield, Burnsville, Eagan, Lakeville and surrounding counties, including Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Scott, Carver, Washington, and Rice. The Office also has handled a significant number of cases from Anoka, Sherburne, and Crow Wing counties. The office is local to the Cities, but available for special cases statewide.
